Anaerobic Bioremediation Facilitates Site
Redevelopment – Saskatoon, Sask.
ALL SOIL AND GROUNDWATER were remediated
through anaerobic bioremediation below ground
surface on the site itself, and o昀昀site disposal
was entirely avoided. A customized mix of solid
and liquid amendments containing micro and
macronutrients was mixed into the contaminated
soils with an excavator as 昀椀ne-grained soils
made injection methods impractical. Overall
remediation costs were approximately 90 per
cent less when compared to excavate and remove
estimates. Remediation was completed within two years
and construction of a new food outlet is underway. The
site will be a source of local employment and increased
tax revenue for the city since redevelopment.
