White昀椀sh Lake, Alta. – Former Municipal Lagoon
Cambridge, Mass. – Former MGP Site
At a decommissioned municipal lagoon, Geo-Solutions implemented large-diameter soil mixing to stabilize organic-rich sediments impacted by nutrients and residual contamination. The in-situ approach
allowed the treated material to remain onsite as a stable, geotechnical 昀椀ll. By eliminating the need for excavation and disposal, the project
achieved both cost savings and alignment with municipal and provincial
sustainability goals.
Geo-Solutions used jet grouting to stabilize about 1,200 cubic yards of soils impacted by former manufactured gas plant (MGP) operations. The treatment area lay directly under a utility-dense corridor with a 36-inch natural gas main, water lines,
and electrical duct banks. High-pressure (3,000–5,000 psi) jet grouting allowed
precise installation of 680 soil-cement columns without disrupting critical infrastructure. This project received several awards after completion, showing ISS can
safely deliver results even in congested, high-risk urban corridors.
Vancouver, B.C. – Expo ’86 Paci昀椀c Place Redevelopment
The bottom line
During redevelopment of the former Expo ’86 site along False Creek,
deep soil mixing (DSM) and jet grouting were used to construct a
groundwater cuto昀昀 wall across 83 hectares of heavily-contaminated
industrial 昀椀ll materials. The barrier system was designed for a 50-year
service life with permeability ess than 1×10-6cm/s, ensuring groundwater pathways to False Creek were controlled. Construction had to accommodate complex urban logistics, including nearby festivals and road
construction, while removing legacy structures such as an old creosote
basin.
With Ontario’s land昀椀ll restriction now landing January 1, 2027, Ontario projects
have a clear window to scale up reuse programs and embed ISS in their earthwork
playbooks while B.C.’s SRIS and Quebec’s traceability framework point in the same
direction: treat and reuse when you can. For brown昀椀elds in dense metros—where
trucking and tipping whipsaw budgets—ISS o昀昀ers a compliant, lowercarbon path to
build on what you already have rather than exporting the problem.
